CAYA was founded over 40 years ago. Originally this organization focused on
organized football for students living near Miller Community Center in the Seattle
Central Area. These Capital Hill football teams were the first organized activities
that became CAYA. In the late 50's Booth Gardner and OL Mitchell along with
several community leaders, developed a written outline of an agency that would
transform the Capital Hill Junior Football Association into the Central Area
Youth Association. In 1964, CAYA was formally established, with OL Mitchell
as the first Director. The purpose of formalizing the organization was to provide
education, recreation and social development activities for youth between the
ages of 9-18. We've gone through some changes over the years but the doors have
remained open due to some very committed people with a vision for CAYA. We now
have a new crew of volunteers that have been working very hard to enhance current
programs and develop new ones. We're very excited about what's happening here
and hope you will be, too.
